This 2006 Toyota Tacoma came into our Kirkland shop on August 20, 2026 with 192,436 miles on it, in for a multi-point vehicle inspection. The owner brought it to us from Brier. The inspection came back with four red flags — one of them serious enough that our technician flagged the truck as not safe to drive. Here is the record of what we found, what we fixed, and what we left alone.
What the inspection found
Our 16-point inspection sheet came back with four items marked red:
The rear driveshaft U-joint had completely failed and was damaging the U-joint flanges. The shaft on the truck was an aftermarket unit. The technician’s note: “Vehicle is not safe to drive with this condition.”
The engine was leaking oil aggressively, with the valve covers identified as the primary culprit. The tech noted there could be other leaks, and that the honest first step was to fix the valve covers, clean the engine, and recheck.
Front brake pads were down to 2mm. Rear drums measured 3mm, which is roughly 50% worn for drum brakes.
The cabin air filter was very dirty, and the oil change was due in about 400 miles according to the service sticker.

The joint had already been damaging the U-joint flanges — the reason we recommended a complete driveshaft rather than pressing new joints into a damaged shaft.

Oil accumulation around the valve cover area, identified during inspection as the primary source of the leak.

Front brake pads at 2mm — documented, quoted, and deferred by the owner for now.
The recommendation
Two decisions shaped this job. First, the driveshaft: because the failed joint had already chewed into the flanges and the existing shaft was aftermarket, our technician recommended a complete new OEM Toyota driveshaft instead of pressing new U-joints into a damaged shaft. Second, the oil leak: rather than quote every possible leak at once, the plan was to replace the valve cover gaskets — the clear primary source — degrease the engine, and recheck before recommending anything further.
The work performed
OEM driveshaft replacement — $1,900–$2,150
We removed the old driveshaft, installed a new Genuine Toyota driveshaft — the single most expensive part on the job — torqued the hardware to spec, and road-tested the truck.
Valve cover gaskets, PCV valve and hose — $950–$1,200
Reaching both valve covers on this engine means removing the upper intake manifold. With everything apart, the technician found the PCV hose cracked — so the PCV valve and hose were replaced with Genuine Toyota parts in the same job, along with new left and right valve cover gaskets. The crew cleaned a large amount of built-up oil and residue off the engine specifically so the repair could be checked for any further leaks, reassembled the intake, started the engine, checked for leaks, and road-tested. No active oil leaks from the repaired areas.
Drive belt — $200–$280 (and the parts we didn’t install)
The serpentine belt was replaced with a Genuine Toyota belt. While the belt was off, the technician checked every pulley for wear and found no loud pulley bearings — so a quoted package of OEM idler and tensioner pulleys, well over a thousand dollars in parts, stayed off the final bill. An inspection should be able to take things off your estimate, not just add them.
Mileage in: 192,436. Mileage out: 192,440. Those four miles are the road tests.
What the owner deferred
Documented and quoted, but deferred for now: the front brake service ($700–$900 quoted with Akebono PRO-ACT ultra-premium ceramic pads, zinc-coated rotors, and a full brake fluid flush), an oil change, and the cabin air filter. Our closing note on the invoice: front brakes are due for service — recommend replacement very soon.
What it cost
All in, this project landed in the $2,700–$3,750 range, completed in August 2026. The single biggest driver was the Genuine Toyota driveshaft itself — an OEM driveline assembly replaces the whole worn unit, and it is priced accordingly. These ranges reflect a completed historical project, not a current quote; a different vehicle or condition will price differently.
If you drive a high-mileage truck
U-joint failure announces itself. Rust-colored powder around the joint means it is running dry and grinding. On this Tacoma it had progressed to flange damage, which turned a joint replacement into a full driveshaft.
Fix the obvious leak first. Replacing the valve cover gaskets and cleaning the engine lets the next inspection confirm whether anything else is actually leaking before you pay for more work.
A good inspection can remove work from your estimate. The pulleys checked out fine here, and over a thousand dollars in quoted parts stayed on the shelf.
