Check Engine Light On? Here's What Kirkland Drivers Should Do

A check engine light is your car’s way of saying “something needs attention.” The good news is that it is not always an emergency. The trick is knowing the difference between “get it looked at this week” and “pull over now.” Here is how to read the situation and what to do next.
First: is the light steady or flashing?
This is the single most useful thing to know.
Steady light: something is off, but it is usually safe to drive in the short term. Get it diagnosed soon rather than living with it for weeks.
Flashing light: this is serious, often an engine misfire that can damage your catalytic converter (an expensive part). Ease off the gas and get in right away, or give us a call.
Common reasons the light comes on
A check engine light can point to a lot of things, from cheap to significant:
A loose or failing gas cap (yes, really, this is common)
A worn oxygen sensor
Spark plugs or ignition coils causing a misfire
A failing catalytic converter
A dirty mass airflow sensor
Battery or charging problems
The only way to know which one is a proper diagnostic scan.
Why “just read the code” is not the whole story
Auto-parts stores will pull a code for free, and that is a fine starting point. But a code points to a system, not always the exact fix. A P0420 code, for example, says “catalytic converter efficiency,” yet the real cause is often an oxygen sensor or an exhaust leak. Replace the converter without checking, and you may spend a lot to fix the wrong thing. Proper diagnosis is how you avoid paying for parts you did not need.
Should you keep driving?
If the light is steady and the car drives normally: you are usually fine to drive it to the shop. Just do not ignore it.
If the light is flashing, or you notice rough running, loss of power, or overheating: stop driving and get help.
